A Facebook Status on Facebook and Social Networking
January 26, 2010
Facebook is a creepy place; it’s like that suspicious neighborhood you do not want to pass through to get to where you’re going. You know, that neighborhood where you always fear that a stranger is watching you or following you–only that in the world of social networking sites, like this one, it’s your friends, your friends’ “friends”, their families, your family, that guy from Bolivia that you just “friended”, that girl from Belgium that you requested because she was “hot” and Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates that are watching and following you. It’s what I like to call “Rear Windowism” and voyeurism in the 21st Century. Or it’s just, simply, the nature of social networking. Then again, have you become anymore sociable with your FB friends, or have you just been gathering up information on their lives by way of “live feed” statuses, replacing your need to call them up and ask them how they’re really doing? Truthfully, we’re all victims and propagators of the same problem, and it’s time to socialize.
